The Big Draw – Living Lines

The Brief

Big draw events capture the joy of collective drawing, their task is to bring an end to the saying “I cant draw” from our vocabulary and they state that drawing can make a difference in our lives. This year the theme is Living Lives. get your marks on this design activism!!

use any materials to create your posters, document the development of your group process in your sketchbooks.

1. Look to current activist campaigns for inspiration.

2. Consider how designers  in your chosen programme of study, would celebrate drawing.

3. what angle could you bring to the message: technological, social, political and economic.

4.consider the location of slessor gardens as a venue.

Part One

In our group of four we came to a conclusion that pencils and pixels shouldn’t be divided as both are equally important and together produce finer art work than what could have been accomplished by one or another. we as a group decided to up with a short and simple slogan that tells us that pencils and pixels are stronger together rather than separate, that is why our slogan is “Better together” which i believe is perfect because it tells people that together united they could change the world and show different shades of Art.

Posters :

 After agreeing on our group slogan we moved on to designing the posters one of the members of the group suggested to split up into to pairs of two  hand drawn posters and two digital made posters. This is because we wanted to show that we are for both and so we went on to creating our posters, i started off with a ruff sketch and decided that i could make a final one digitally, in that way i demonstrated that in order to make a good artwork you need to split the making process into three sections one is using your imagination/creativity in your head. Then you need to bring that idea to life by drawing it for example a rough sketch and finally you can either draw a better quality or make a digital version depending on your preference.

As a group we worked on enhancing the three main peace symbols used in modern protests, the Ying Yang, Smiley face and peace symbol. We incorporated the images associated with pencils and pixels and then formatted them into the symbols together to show the peace between the two disciplines.

Part two

Second Brief:

‘As our contribution to the Big Draw festival, your group is asked to engage in chalk drawings on the paths around Slessor gardens. The content of the drawings should reflect the changing nature of the waterfront of Dundee. Taking into consideration the V&A museums presence and the discovery walk plaques that are integrated in the walkways, celebrating significant figures from Dundee. N.B We will be working with Suzanne Scott, designer of the discovery walks.

Slessor garden walk:

As our class made their way to slessor gardens a small group of us had stopped at caird hall as you can see below we are holding our posters and sandwich boards before making our way down to join the rest of the class at slessor gardens.

Chalk drawings at Slessor Gardens :

The three peace symbols that my group had chosen were to be chalked onto the pavements of Slessor Gardens to promote our idea of unity among pencil and pixels as our slogan says “BETTER TOGETHER”. The following pictures show the drawings that we as a group created to visually represent our campaign:
